Ballet Austin: Giselle

May
10
8:00 pm

WHO: Ballet Austin Company

WHAT: Giselle is considered one of the “great” Romantic-era ballets, with a lead role so challenging it has been known to make and break careers. Featuring choreography by Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot and based on a poem by Heinrich Heine, Giselle tells the story of a beautiful peasant girl who finds true love in life — and death. Passion, betrayal, a battle with the Wilis (a group of evil female spirits) and ultimate redemption make Giselle a story that captures the imagination, generation after generation.

With live accompaniment by the Austin Symphony Orchestra, Giselle is a Mother’s Day treat that’s sure to be cherished. Ballet Austin last performed Giselle in the 2002/03 Season. Don’t wait another 10 years to see this pinnacle of classical ballet technique right here in Austin.

WHEN: May 10 – 12

WHERE: Dell Hall at The Long Center

Blue Lapis Light: Heaven~Earth~One

May
19
9:00 pm

WHO: Blue Lapis Light is a site-specific aerial dance company founded by Artistic Director Sally Jacques in 2005. Jacques’ earlier works encompassed social, political, and spiritual themes, and these performances have evolved to explore movement through the air: extending boundaries, defying edges, and suspending graceful athleticism for the risk of igniting ephemeral beauty.

WHAT: Blue Lapis Light is excited to reprise this beautiful show on the Long Center’s City Terrace, featuring dancers on the ground and in the air. 2012’s nine-show run of Heaven~Earth~One was well-received by audiences and critics alike, selling out the weekend and final few nights. We recommend purchasing tickets in advance with your group to ensure you don’t miss this unique and fleeting show!

WHEN: May 19th – 26th at  9pm – 10pm

WHERE: The Long Center Terrace

National Tap Dance Day!

May

WHO: Tapestry Dance Company is holding the Austin event this year!

WHAT: National Tap Dance Day falls on May 25 every year and is a celebration of tap dancing as an American art form. The idea of National Tap Dance Day was first presented to U.S. Congress on February 7, 1989 and was signed into American law by President George H.W. Bush on November 8, 1989.Th e one-time official observance was on May 25, 1989. Tap Dance Day is also celebrated in other countries, particularly Japan, Australia, India and Iceland.

National Tap Dance Day was the brainchild of Carol Vaughn, Nicola Daval, and Linda Christensen. They deemed May 25 appropriate for this holiday because it is the birthday of Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, a significant contributor to tap dance.

Rude Mechanincals: Stop Hitting Yourself

Apr

8:00 pm

WHO: Rude Mechanicals is an ensemble-based theatre collective from Austin, TX

WHAT: Rude Mechs is currently embracing the fundamental beliefs underlying late-stage capitalism and indulging in our version of 1930′s Hollywood glamour. Tap dancing, fine dining, and the missionary position will all be employed in order to help all Americans stop hitting yourself.

WHEN: April 4 – 21, 2013
Thursday – Sunday at 8 pm
